EAGAN, MN — An Eagan Police Department K9, Bear, will receive a donated bullet and stab protective vest, Eagan PD shared on its Facebook page. The donation was from non-profit Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and the vest was sponsored by Madeline Hamersley of Sorrento, ME, police said. The vest will be embroidered "In memory of Karen Killilea," the department said. Bear will get his vest in eight to ten weeks, according to police. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement in the U.S., the department said. The vests are made in the U.S. and are custom-fitted, according to the post. Since it started in 2009, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has donated over 4,415 vests, worth $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by donations, the department shared. A donation of $960 sponsors one vest, each of which are worth around $1,700-$2,200, police said. More information can be found on the non-profit's website.
