Description

Join us for a community bike ride and enjoy some giveaways. Latino Outdoors SLC is heading a bit north for a bike ride on gravel roads around a conservation area for birds and wetland species. Meet us in the classroom of the Eccles Wildlife Education Center at Farmington Bay's Waterfowl Management Area to join the fun! We are serving champurrado and pasteles (bring your own mug); taking an easy-paced 6 mile bike ride; observing wildlife; and giving away prizes. This bike ride is on flat ground and dirt roads, with few interactions with motorized vehicles. It is a great ride for all experience levels of cyclists, and children aged 10 and older. Please RSVP by November 2. If you RSVP but can’t make it, please email [email protected] to relinquish your spot to someone on the waiting list. HUGE thanks to Bike Utah, Tracy Aviary, Specialized, and the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area for your contributions to our first community bike ride! Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat should I bring? Your bike, helmet, water bottle, gloves, a mug for champurrado, and warm clothes. What kind of clothes should I wear? It'll be chilly, but that doesn’t mean you can’t ride warm and comfortably! We suggest you dress in layers. Wear thick socks, leggings under your pants, and layer jackets/sweaters over your shirt. Layering your clothes makes it possible for you to remove clothing and cool down if you get too warm when riding. As a general rule, avoid wearing a cotton base layer if you can. When cotton gets wet from sweat in cold weather, it stays wet and steals your body warmth. We recommend wearing a synthetic material base layer, such as a jersey or artificial blend fabric shirt. What kind of bike is appropriate for this ride? What is the terrain like on this ride? The ride is on a flat dirt road characterized with gravel covering and washboard sections. There are also short sections of boardwalk, and no pavement. Any bike will be great for this ride except road bikes with exceptionally skinny tires. We do not recommend you come with a bike fitted with less than a 28 cc tire width. In other words, if you are comfortable riding your bike on a dirt road, then it’ll work for this ride. Are dogs allowed? Dogs are not allowed at this event. Isn’t it too cold to bike ride in November? We agree, the weather may be brisk. But appropriate clothing will ensure you are warm and comfortable while riding. Please see the section on clothing above for advice on how to dress for riding in cold weather. If you are particularly worried about staying warm on the ride, consider bringing a thermos filled with hot water so you can stay warm and hydrated while riding. You can also consider bringing along hand warmers to keep in your pockets or gloves. Bicycling builds up body heat in no time though, so you can expect to get warm while riding. LO’s COVID-19 Guidelines All attendees must maintain physical distancing. Leaders and participants will decide together whether or not to wear masks. Anyone who feels sick or has been exposed to someone with COVID-19 should stay home. In the case that someone begins displaying symptoms during an outing, they will be escorted back to their vehicle to go home and rest or separated from others until they can go home. As the pandemic evolves, so will our approach to keeping you safe. We thank you for your patience and flexibility as we manage this, and invite you to check in with us if you have any questions. What you can expect from LO: To ensure the number of people present at in-person gatherings does not go beyond what is considered safe by local health guidelines; to be given accurate and truthful information about LO outings in the context of COVID-19; adherence to county public health department guidelines. What LO expects from participants: We take safety at our community outings very seriously. We ask participants to self-certify that they do not have symptoms, have not been diagnosed with or had direct contact with a known or suspected COVID-19 case in the past 14 days, and will comply with LO’s safety policies and procedures. Together, we can ensure safe, positive, and meaningful experiences in nature.
