Join us as we kick off Investiture Week with SSU Day of Service! In partnership with the United Way of the Costal Empire, Savannah State University (SSU) is dedicating Monday, November 8th to serving our campus and community. Current and former SSU students, faculty, staff, and their friends & family are invited to participate in service events on campus and at various locations throughout Savannah. *The first 100 registrants will receive #SSUServes t-shirts!* Sign up for your chosen event and timeslot by using the "Register" button to the right. The deadline to register for all service events is Wednesday, November 3rd. Expect to receive more details about your chosen event(s) via email after the deadline. If you have any questions, please email [email protected]. ______________________________________________________________________________________ Service Events on CampusThanksgiving Baskets (9am, 10am, 11am): In partnership with the International Education Center, create special baskets full of holiday food & favorites for members of our Tiger Family who won't be able to spend time with their family this season. Please note that this service option requires volunteers spend a minimum of $10 to contribute items to the baskets.SSU Superstar Car Wash (11am, 12pm, 1pm): Volunteer to treat SSU faculty & staff who have served for 20+ years with a free car wash. Pizza provided!Holiday Crafting Circle (3pm - 5pm): Great for both novice or expert crafters, join the circle to create handmade gifts to donate to local hospitals. Knit or crochet baby beanies, create greeting cards, or bring your own service project to complete. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own crafting materials, and extra for others should they be able.Random Acts of Kindness (all day!): Have your own idea for SSU Day of Service? Amazing, go for it! Remember to wear your #SSUServes t-shirt and use the hashtag on social media! Donate Blood (Nov. 9th, 11am - 5pm): Did you know that a single donation of your blood can save up to three lives? Sign up for the American Red Cross blood drive via this link, NOT via this Eventbrite page.Service Events in the CommunityPark Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter (9am, 11am, 1pm): Help beautify the shelter by completing painting projects in the common area, office space, and bathrooms. Paint and supplies are provided. The mission of Park Place Outreach Youth Emergency Shelter is to provide services to at-risk youth and their families, increase their functional level, and reunify families whenever possible. Address: 514 E Henry St, Savannah, GA 31401Salvation Army Community Center (9am - 11am): Spruce up the community center's playground by assisting with spreading new mulch. When hard times hit, The Salvation Army is here to help meet all of your basic needs. Whether you need a bag of groceries to get through the week, a hot meal, or assistance paying an outstanding bill, every county in Georgia has a Salvation Army Worship and Community Center, Service Center, or Service Unit representative ready to help. Address: 3000 Bee Road, Savannah, GA 31404Old Savannah City Mission (11am - 1pm): Prepare and serve meal trays to the community. The Old Savannah City Mission is a local 501(c)(3) funded by people who care about the less fortunate and demonstrate it by giving of their time, talent and treasure. The Mission works with a bare-bone Staff of seven employees. This community’s dedicated servants work with hundreds of volunteers to deliver services to Savannah’s most vulnerable and needy citizens in a highly cost effective way. Address: 2414 Bull St, Savannah, GA 31401Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia (3pm-5pm): Assist with administering reading and math support with the after school 21st Century Program. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Address: 535 E. Liberty Street, Savannah, GA 31401Emmaus House Soup Kitchen (10am - 12pm): Help sort clothing donations to go into the clothing closet. Emmaus House is an unrestricted soup kitchen; a respite from the outside elements for individuals experiencing homelessness. They believe that everyone has the right to a hot meal, clean clothing and a hot shower. Emmaus House is under the United Ministries of Savannah, which includes Christ Church Episcopal, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, First Baptist Church of Savannah, First Presbyterian Church, and Lutheran Church of the Ascension. Address: Christ Church Savannah, 18 Abercorn St, Savannah, GA 31401 Costal Empire Habitat for Humanity Restore (9am - 12pm, 12pm-4:30pm): Support the office with clerical needs. Habit for Human is an affordable homeownership ministry committed to partnering with low-income, working families to realize their dream of owning quality, affordable and energy-efficient homes in safe and revitalizing neighborhoods in Chatham County, GA. As one of 1,600 affiliates in the US and part of Habitat for Humanity International, which is active in 70 countries around the world, Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity addresses the need for safe and affordable shelter both locally and around the world.
