PATCHOGUE, NY — Election Day is almost upon us, and Patch is giving you a look at the candidates on the Nov. 2 ballot. In the 7th Legislative District, Republican Dominick Thorne faces off against Democratic incumbent Legis. Rob Calarco. Thorne discusses why he deserves to win and answers Patch's Q&As below. Age (as of Election Day) 54 Position Sought Suffolk County Legislator District 7 Party Affiliation Republican / Conservative Family Married with two children ages three and one Does anyone in your family work in politics or government? None Education High School, Suffolk County EMS Occupation Asst. Election Clerk, Suffolk County Board Of Elections Previous or Current Elected or Appointed Office none Campaign website Citizens for Dominick Thorne on Facebook Why are you seeking elective office? To bring positive change to Suffolk County and restore common sense spending, protect our police and residents, and make Suffolk County more affordable. The single most pressing issue facing our (board, district, etc.) is _______, and this is what I intend to do about it. Out of control spending, public safety, and the removal of publicly-financed campaigns. What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post? Common sense, core values like liberty, the constitution. I am pro-police, pro-America, and most of all, pro-service. If you are a challenger, in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)? The improper spending of public funds, such as the public finance of campaigns to the tune of $1.8 million. [My opponent] has not stood up to New York State and demanded our roadways be repaired like Sunrise Highway and the Long Island expressway, which is all due to one-party rule in the state. How do you think local officials performed in responding to the coronavirus? What if anything would you have done differently? On a town level, an outstanding response. The county has failed to reach out to all areas by supplying information in all languages to serve all residents. Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform. I understand the day-to-day struggle of the everyday paycheck-to-paycheck life. Furthermore, I will build both Americanism and unity in our communities. We are far too divided as a nation and Suffolk County is no exception. We must promote more conversations and less arguments. We need to reach out to communities in the 7th district that have been ignored for the last 10 years. What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job? As a former volunteer Emergency Medical Services Critical Care Provider in the communities, and a neighborhood organizer of a community watch program, I understand that service to others is not only a responsibility but an honor. As a usher at my church, the community is everything to me, and what a great honor to have the ability to help so many people. The best advice ever shared with me was: Be humble, but brave. What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions? I am a regular, everyday working man who understands that now more than ever, it's time to stand together, and use a common-sense approach to government, that every resident from the homeless to our most well-to-do residents deserves to be served and protected. That our police, by large, do an outstanding job. That our frontline workers must be protected. That our country and county are worth fighting for. The residents of our area are generally good in nature. I believe that we can be a shining star, all while protecting our rights.
