DEDHAM, MA - The ongoing issue of double polls in Dedham is another step closer to being resolved, as Town Manager Leon Goodwin reported that he met with an Eversource representative and discussed the removal of 22 double polls. At Thursday's Select Board meeting, Goodwin spoke of a meeting he had with an Eversource representative on Oct. 15 where they discussed the timeline for their removal. Double polls are usually created when a utility pole needs to be replaced. The new pole is placed alongside the one to be removed to aid in transferring the electric, telephone, cable, or other wires from one pole to the other. They also help support poles that are older or have been damaged in car accidents. But in Dedham's case, more than 140 double polls have remained on the sidewalks for several months, despite a state law requiring that they be removed within 90 days. Some are supported with duct tape. Most of the double poles are located on Bridge and Ames streets, Select Board members were told at a June meeting. "I think it was actually a very informative meeting in that the polls that Eversource had identified as being a priority were the ones that fell onto the Select Board's list priority list that we were able to generate," Goodwin said. "It looks like there are 22 that are ready to pull." He noted that he received a commitment to remove the 22 poles "within the next couple of weeks." After that, the removal will be prioritized based upon their condition and if they block sidewalks. "I know that people are frustrated," he said. "It's something that this board should be proud of that they're making progress on it." Another concern was the installation of meters on Eastern Avenue. They already have been placed on Washington and High streets in Dedham Square, which has caused concern among business owners and their customers. The Fall Annual Town Meeting is scheduled for Nov. 15. Goodwin said that Town Moderator Dan Driscoll suggested that it be held at the Dedham Health & Athletic Complex to be able to properly accommodate members. More information will be forthcoming.
