BROCKTON, MA — Starting Monday morning, Brockton high schoolers must walk through a metal detector before entering the building.
The metal detectors are part of a new safety plan implemented by both the school system and police after a nearly two-hour stay-in-place order was initiated Friday when a Snapchat video of a student with a magazine clipped to his pants surfaced.
Brockton Public Schools say the student was pulled from class and admitted to taking the video last month and posting it Friday.
The student is expected to face criminal charges and serious school disciplinary action.
In addition to metal detectors, all students are now subject to a bag search.
Now bags are only allowed if they are the size of their laptop or smaller, and they will not be allowed to take backpacks or bags around the school.
The school says the bags can be still be accessed but will have to be dropped off at designated locations.
"It pains me that these new measures are necessary," Brockton High School Principal Cynthia Burns said in a statement to the school district. "However, after consulting staff, students and families, we feel that this is what is needed to make our community feel safe."
We want to thank our students for their incredible patience this morning as the high school rolled out its new safety measures. As with any new process, we will get better and more efficient every day. 1/3— Brockton Public (@BrocktonSchools) October 25, 2021 READ MORE: Brockton Student Faces Charges After Sparking Stay In Place OrderBrockton Student Arrested After Bringing Gun To School Like this article?
