First, today's weather: Some sun, then clouds; cool. High: 61 Low: 52. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: I think we can all attest that was one heckuva storm that rolled through here on Sunday! Downtown Sacramento officially set its all-time 24-hour rainfall record with Sunday's storm. The National Weather Service says, between 1 a.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday, a total of 5.44 inches fell in Downtown Sacramento. That beat the old record of 5.28 inches set back in 1880. And get this - Sacramento Executive Airport's 24-hour total is already 81.9 percent of the total precipitation it got in the whole 2020-2021 water year! Yeah. It was crazy! (CBS Sacramento) The brand new McKinley Park Water Vault, a recently finished East Sacramento construction project, is already full! The weekend rain filled up the 6-million gallon container. Carlos Eliason, a spokesperson for the City of Sacramento, said the vault is built for a 10-year-storm, yet Sunday's rainfall is being estimated as a 100-year-storm. He said flooding would have been much worse had the vault not taken in some of that rainfall. (KCRA3)Sacramento came in at 143 on US News list of 150 Best Places to Retire in the US. Not surprisingly, the lower scores came in the category of value, but we did well on quality of life, with the publication calling out our availability of outdoor activities like bike trails and farmer's markets. (US News and World Report)Two people were arrested on Saturday after attempting to kill a police officer in Galt, according to the Galt Police Department. They were identified as 24-year-old Alejandro Reyes-Rios and 24-year-old Virginia Maria Montanez. Police said an officer noticed a car that he identified from a previous case where a man was arrested for driving under the influence. The officer heard shots from the area of the vehicle that hit the ground near where he was standing. Reyes-Rios faces charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. Montanez faces charges of attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and accessory after the fact. (ABC10)Skiing on Halloween? Maybe not, but snow totals in the mountains over the weekend are very impressive. Donner Summit and Soda Springs each picked up nearly 30 inches and Kirkwood even picked up well over a foot of the white stuff.
