OAK LAWN, IL — Halloween falls on Sunday this year, which means that Oak Lawn kids will get a few extra hours to go trick or treating. Trick-or-treating hours in Oak Lawn are set for 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 31, which should make all superheroes and Disney princesses very happy. Parents are advised to accompany young children on their rounds through the neighborhood.Halloween this year is expected to be less weird than 2020, when kids and parents were discouraged from participating in Halloween activities due to the pandemic by the Centers for Disease and Prevention Control. Thankfully, the CDC isn't making those same recommendations in 2021, but trick-or-treating should be fine but with a few caveats, according to Rochelle Walensky, the director of the CDC.Currently, children under 12 years old are not eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Parents and children should remain outside as much as possible, and be choosy about which activities to take part in. "I wouldn't necessarily go to a crowded Halloween party, but I think that we should be able to let our kids go trick-or-treating in small groups," Rochelle said. "I hope that we can do that this year." If you plan to hand out treats, do it outdoors, or set up a table with individually wrapped treats for kiddos to grab. Wear gloves when distributing candy. Here are a few more tips to help make Halloween safe for kids and maybe even avoid a trip to the hospital emergency room: Plan a route. Stick to routes that children are familiar with. Wear comfy shoes. Remember, you're walking and maybe even running. Girls especially should avoid wearing heels with their costumes. Stay well-lit. Bring a flashlight or use the app on your phone to keep your trick-or-treaters' paths well lit when out after dusk. Also apply reflective tape to costumes, so drivers can see them at night. Make sure costumes are short. Avoid tripping hazards by shortening pants and skirts on costumes. You don't want to spend Halloween at the dentist with an unhappy goblin who tripped and chipped a tooth. A Halloween mask is not a substitute for wearing a face mask. Use makeup to complete your ensemble, and wear a mask. Avoid weapons as costume accessories. If your child insists on a carrying a weapon, make sure it's rubber or plastic. Choose a prop that won't poke another kid's eye out. Don't eat candy until bring it home. Parents should check their children's haul at the end of the night. Toss any candy that is not wrapped or in its proper wrapper. Motorists should take extra caution when driving during trick-or-treat hours.
