CONCORD, NH — A number of New Hampshire business organizations including bankers, realtors, insurers, chambers, and others have signed a letter to the state's federal delegation openly opposing proposals that would allow the IRS to spy on bank and other financial accounts. According to Kristy Merrill, the president of NH Bankers Association, the organizations oppose the proposals because the tracking of inflow or outflow of accounts, whether $600 or $10,000, were "extremely expansive" and would intrude on the lives of the state's residents and businesses. "We are grateful for the broad array of organizations who are standing with New Hampshire's banking industry in opposition to the proposed IRS reporting requirements," she said. "This proposal infringes on fundamental privacy rights, does not achieve the desired result, and has the potential for unintended and serious negative consequences. The end simply does not justify the means, and we encourage Congress to focus its attention elsewhere." The letter noted that financial institutions already report the exchange of currency that is more than $10,000 in a single day to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network to prevent money laundering and financial crimes. It also said there was "nothing inherently suspicious" about having more than $10,000 move through a financial account during a year. What is being proposed now was "a far broader and far more invasive type of ongoing general account surveillance of most Granite Staters — which is unprecedented and deeply concerning," the letter stated. The full letter can be found online here. Bradley Gets Visionary Voice Award The New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence nominated state Sen. Jeb Bradley (R-Wolfeboro) to be the recipient of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center's 2021 Visionary Voice Award for the state. Bradley was commended for being a longtime advocate and also, a point person to have the "Howie Leung Loophole," which assisted in keeping teachers and others in positions of authority from being prosecuted for abusing teens and children, removed from state law. He was nominated earlier this year but now has officially received the award. "It has been a pleasure to work with the NH Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence," he said. "The coalition has been a principled and effective leader in the effort to strengthen our laws to protect victims from domestic and sexual violence. It is truly an honor to be recognized by one of the most respected organizations in our state." State Sen. Jeb Bradley with the Visionary Voice Award.
