No Bond For Man Accused Of Shooting At Lombard Cop

LOMBARD, IL — A Chicago man who was out on bond is being held without bond at DuPage County Jail after he was accused of firing a shot at a Lombard police officer at 7-Eleven. Romaine Turner, 21, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and armed habitual criminal in connection with the Oct. 21 incident. Police were called to the 7-Eleven at 1 West St. Charles Rd. around 8:30 a.m. for a report of two men in ski masks going into the store. An officer got to the scene and began speaking to Turner and another man he encountered, according to a news release from DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Turner is accused of fleeing on foot after another Lombard police car pulled up. An officer ran after Turner and followed him around the corner of a building, at which time Turner is accused of using a handgun to fire a shot at the officer before continuing to flee on foot. Turner was taken into custody on West St. Charles Road later that same day. At the time, Turner had been out on bond for armed habitual criminal charges in Cook County. "There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that Mr. Turner should have been given a cash bond the first time he was charged as an armed habitual criminal," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. Berlin added, "Providing a twice convicted felon the opportunity to post a relatively small bond, just $2,500 in Mr. Turner's Cook County case, put the public and law enforcement at great risk, as alleged in this case." Turner is set to appear in court again Nov. 9.
