GILROY, CA — School resource officers (SROs) are expected to be back on campus at Gilroy Unified School District high schools after officials described an increase in fights this school year, according to the Gilroy Dispatch. The contracts for the school district's two SROs were not renewed this year, the Dispatch reported. There have been 84 incidents at the high schools this year involving "fights, alcohol/drugs or other incidents that resulted in disciplinary action," according to district data. There were 50 incidents during 2019-20, which was shortened due to the pandemic, and 106 incidents the previous year. The Board of Education voted 6-1 last week in favor of paying half of the contract for the two SROs. The Gilroy City Council will discuss the remaining half at a later date, according to the Dispatch. Superintendent Deborah Flores told the Dispatch that students are "relearning how to interact with each other and staff" since returning to in-person learning. Read more in the Gilroy Dispatch here.
