BATAVIA, IL — Questions and comments about children receiving the COVID-19 vaccine have been swirling as national officials prepare for the vaccine's approval for those as young as 5. In Batavia, Mayor Jeffery Schielke said residents may have more definitive answers on Nov. 3. In his weekly address to residents, Schielke said he can't give definite information about where parents will be able to vaccinate their children, but he was told by "the powers that be" on Friday that more details might be released Nov. 3 "Let me just say that the city of Batavia is here to work with anybody that's trying to do this, to get these out to the children of Batavia, but there's a lot of stuff involved here," he said in a video posted on YouTube Friday. "I guess there's some desire that any kid that's getting a shot, there has to be a parent maybe even present with them when it's done, so I don't know all the details or what the requirements are going to be." "I don't think you're going to see the shots being given away in schools, at least at the moment. That's the impression I'm getting," the mayor said, adding that he talked to other nearby mayors and school district officials about the topic before coming to that conclusion. Schielke said vaccines for children might be administered at Batavia's vaccination site, located at 501 N. Randall Road. Currently in Batavia's 60510 zip code, about 64.9 percent of the population — or 19,167 people — are fully vaccinated, according to the latest data from the Illinois Department of Public Health.
