UNION SQUARE, NY – A gunman shot a subway passenger on a crowded rush hour train during an attempted robbery near Union Square Monday evening, police said. The man pointed a gun at the seated straphanger and demanded he hand over his cell phone at 5:55 p.m., the NYPD's Assistant Chief Vincent Coogan said. "He didn't comply fast enough and he fired one time, striking the victim in the left leg as the train entered Union Square," Coogan said. The gunman ran into the station without the phone and had not been caught as of 7 p.m., Coogan said. The shooting happened on a northbound N train. Officers who were already patrolling the station applied a tourniquet to the 42-year-old victim's injured leg and he was rushed to Bellevue Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Monday night, Coogan said.
