TUCSON, AZ — A vehicle struck Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry while he was bicycling with friends in downtown Tucson Saturday morning, knocking him from his bike, according to Pima County and Huckelberry's family.
As of Saturday afternoon, Huckelberry was in stable but critical condition at a local hospital, according to the county.
On Monday afternoon, Huckelberry's family released a statement on the accident, describing him as an "experienced and avid rider" who was wearing a helmet, gloves and a bright jersey at the time of the crash. They said he never wore earphones while riding and was focused on a safe and fun ride.
"But as too often happens to cyclists, bad luck prevailed," the Huckelberry family said in the statement. "He was knocked off his bike downtown and needed prompt emergency care. The medics of Tucson Fire responded quickly and professionally, as did the Tucson Police Department. We are immensely grateful to them for the care and kindness that they provided. We also thank everyone who has respected our wish for privacy in these initial days of his treatment and recovery."
The county did not provide any additional details on the crash or updates on Huckelberry's condition.
