Join us for a dance documentary film screening with Q&A and live dance demonstration from special guest dance legend Archie Burnett. We're excited to welcome Check Your Body at the Door, a film set in motion after discovering life-changing dancers at David Mancuso's The Loft in NYC, and dance legend Archie Burnett, grandfather of the iconic House of Ninja, to the 3rd annual Dunedin International Film Festival. This event will feature a screening of the 90's house dance documentary, Q&A, and live dance demonstration in an open air venue with social distancing, mask wearing, and other COVID-19 safety measures strictly enforced. There will also be a Punking, Whacking, and Vogue Masterclass with Archie hosted by What the Punk Fest the night before, with more details still to be announced. Check Your Body at the Door A film about some remarkable underground House dancers in NYC during the golden decade of the 1990's. It follows master freestyle dancers into the clubs, their jobs, and their everyday lives. Filmed in the studio as well, the dancers’ virtuosic moves are brilliantly revealed in silhouette or light pools. In their words, they describe clubbing, why they dance, how they dance, and what it means. checkyourbodyatthedoor.com Archie Burnett Archie Burnett, griot/guide of Check Your Body at the Door, grew up in Brooklyn in a strict Seventh Day Adventist family where dancing was forbidden. He started dancing “on the sly” when he was three-years old in front of the TV. A self-taught freestyle dancer who didn't go to a NYC club until 1979 ("I was almost twenty!"), he invited Sally Sommer to DJ David Mancuso’s Loft in 1982, which inspired the idea for Check Your Body at the Door. As a pioneer of Vogue and 40 year international Ambassador of Urban Dances like Punking, Whacking, and Hustle, the 6'4" tall Burnett has earned international acclaim for his iconic style and geometric body lines. Burnett works for NYC Transit Authority, is an avid weightlifter, graphic artist, and splits his time between work, family, clubs and teaching House dance at NYC’s Peridance. He spends a good deal of the year teaching, often worldwide in such places as Germany, Austria, Poland, Belgium, France, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Italy, Japan, and Brazil. He has also given lecture/demonstrations and has been on scholarly panels at Yale, Duke University, Harvard, New York University, and Florida State University. Burnett has appeared in several music videos and independent films and, besides dancing at the clubs, he also performs for concert-dance choreographers Doug Elkins, David Neumann, and Cori Colinghouse. He has shown his own work at Dance Theater Workshop, PS122, DanceSpace, DixonPlace, 92nd Street Y, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and Théâtre Suresnes Jean Vilar in Paris. facebook.com/ArchieBurnett Burnett will be on hand to talk about the film, dance culture, and answer any questions as well as do a live demonstration of underground dance styles Vogue and Punking.
