Description

Looking for a semi-improvisational band that plays long songs - I like a 15 minute epic like "Down By The River". I have a moderate but growing understanding of music theory - enough to alienate those who pride themselves on not knowing anything, but not enough to please the jazz folks. Not really a shredder - I prefer playing in a lumbering behemoth like Crazy Horse than galloping along like Iron Maiden. I have songs, but I don't love singing. Also, and not to be a dick, but if your band suffers from what I call "Shins Disease" (when you could remove every single person in the band but the singer and the drummer and no one would even notice), I'm not looking to be on stage because I want people to look at me. I want to be in a band, where everyone is an equal member and not a stage prop strumming open chords. No offense to Mercer- he's a great singer/lyricist. I just don't want to have to deal with someone whose greatest fear is that someone, at some point, might take their eyes off of them when they are on stage. They tend to be a handful. This doesn't mean I create a tepid, murky bath of jazz fusion wankery, either: that's just as dull. Stuff I have been listening to lately: King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry as well as some Basic Channel/Rhythm & Sound dub techno. Fugazi, Jawbox, June of 44, Shiner, Tortoise, etc. Rocco DeLuca is blowing my mind lately. Daniel Lanois does great stuff too. Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharrock, Alice Coltrane (John too), Sun Ra Pino Palladino/Blake Mills weird side project is awesome. Latin Playboys, Tom Waits, Juana Molina, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, Tones On Tail, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Dif Juz, Wolfgang Press. Just be reliable and want to show up once or twice a week. Or three times, even. I love to rehearse.
