STAMFORD, CT — A Stamford man has been charged in connection with a violent Downtown assault that hospitalized a 27-year-old victim in June, according to the Stamford Police Department. Capt. Richard Conklin of the SPD said Antonio Hernandez-Alvarez, 27, of Stamford, turned himself in on Thursday on an arrest warrant that charges him with second-degree assault. Hernandez-Alvarez, who admitted to the assault in a prior police interview, posted a $40,000 court-set bond and was released, Conklin said. A large fight occurred near 20 Summer St. outside of the Riviera Maya Restaurant and Bar in the early morning hours of June 13, according to Conklin. Officers found a male victim unconscious and transported him to Stamford Hospital where he was diagnosed with "a very serious brain bleed." The victim had to be hospitalized for several days before he was released, Conklin said. Conklin said the person who assaulted the victim left before officers arrived. Investigator Luis Velez from the SPD pulled useful security video from several downtown restaurants and the Bell Street parking garage. "The suspect could be seen to have distinctive tattoos on his neck and chest. Investigator Velez distributed a memo to the department with those photos asking if anyone knew this party," Conklin said. On Sept. 19, Officer Driton Zhema spotted a man in the Downtown area that looked like the person in the memo, Conklin said. "He was able to detain him and identify him as Antonio Hernandez-Alvarez," Conklin said. Velez interviewed Hernandez-Alvarez, and he confessed to the assault, according to Conklin. An arrest warrant was applied for, which only recently came back from the court, and Hernandez-Alvarez turned himself into the SPD on Thursday. "This was a very good job by investigator Luis Velez and Officer Driton Zhema, who recognized this guy from the memo and brought this serious assault to a conclusion," said Conklin.
