Here are the top stories in Concord today: If you hear airplanes, and sirens a-blarin' next week, don't worry. It's not an attack by Snoopy or the Red Baron. It's part of an annual requirement to maintain Federal Aviation Administration certification for the airport in Concord. Live fire training exercises, including a simulation of a plane fire, are taking place next week at Buchanan Field, Contra Costa County officials said. Exercises will happen Monday through Friday next week on the west side of the airport, and the county is advising people to not call 911 if they see anything related to the exercises. (SF Bay)Mandatory 11-digit local dialing will be implemented for the 925 area code starting on October 24, 2021. To complete all local calls, you will now need to dial 1+ area code + telephone number. This applies to all calls within the area code that are currently dialed with seven digits. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted 988 as a new three-digit number to be used nationwide to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline, starting July 16, 2022. For 988 to work in the 925 area code, mandatory 11-digit local dialing must first be implemented (Contra Costa Herald)Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors Chair Diane Burgis is recovering at home following successful surgery to implant a pacemaker as a precaution to help steady an irregular heartbeat. The surgery went very smoothly. "If I hadn't gone in for my routine preventative appointments, I wouldn't have known that my heart was not doing its job to its full capacity," Supervisor Burgis observed. "Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been encouraging people to keep up with their regular exams and tests rather than waiting to get medical care. I'm glad that I followed my advice." (East County Today)People were offered a wide range of available positions at the job fair in Mt. Diablo Unified School District on Thursday. The district's Director of HR Ryan Sheehy said on average, Mount Diablo Unified has up to 110 teaching vacancies a day. Adding, wherever needed, school staff and site administrators have stepped in. "During the pandemic, when we shifted to virtual learning, we did not hire all the assistant positions and all those classified positions that were helping out in the classrooms each and every day," he explained. Now they're needed desperately. (Concord News Journal)At its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26, the Concord City Council/Local Reuse Authority will consider the Concord First Partners, LLC exclusive negotiating agreement (ENA) for the base reuse project at the former Concord Naval Weapons Station.
