Oratorio Chorale and the Bowdoin College Chorus Present: Mass for Double Choir + Unforeseen Grace
This November, the Oratorio Chorale and the Bowdoin College Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Emily Isaacson, present Unforeseen Grace, a program celebrating the magic that happens at the intersection of music, environment, and community.
The Portland performance will take place in two outdoor venues:
Martin's Mass for Double Choir – Portland City Hall , 5:00 p.m.Isaacson & Gillis's Unforeseen Grace – Lincoln Park, 5:30 p.m.
There will be no seating provided for these performances. Guests are encouraged to bring their own beach chairs or picnic blankets for Mass for Double Choir if desired. Unforeseen Grace is an immersive experience where audience members will move amongst the performers.
THE PROGRAM
Frank Martin: Mass for Double Choir
For Frank Martin (1890–1974), making art and praying were private activities of faith, not a public act or a musical performance. Thus, Mass for Double Choir sat in a drawer for over 40 years until Martin finally allowed it to be performed in 1963. Mass for Double Choir is now recognized as one of the great masterpieces of twentieth-century choral music.
Emily Isaacson and Logan Gillis: Unforeseen Grace
In this self-directed concert, audiences are invited to create their own immersive sonic experience as they travel through an outdoor space amid 70 performers. Original music by Emily Isaacson and Logan Gillis; staging by Kevin Newbury.

All Unforeseen Grace events are open to the public free of charge but require advance registration via Eventbrite.
