Description

presented by the Communications Director at Sanford Lab, Constance Walter will walk attendees through how to promote unique products. What happens deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility? Why is science important? And how does one promote such an esoteric topic? In this talk, Constance will touch briefly on the science experiments at SURF, then dive into how Sanford Lab promotes their unique “product.” Event Details11:30 AM - Business Networking 12:00 PM - Program Begins (lunch provided) 1:00 PM - Program Ends (AAF Black Hills members are able to attend the event at no charge; non-member pricing includes lunch. Tickets purchased after noon on 11/12/21 are not guaranteed a meal as catering numbers will be submitted.) About the SpeakerConstance Walter currently serves as the Communications Director for the Sanford Underground Research Facility, a world-leading physics laboratory, where she oversees media and acts as a community relations liaison, plans events, works on strategic marketing for SURF, Education and Outreach and the newly establish Foundation. She considers herself fortunate to work with a team of incredibly creative and dedicated people: engineers, educators, students and so many others. Over her 30-year communications career, she has served as the entertainment magazine editor at the Lincoln Journal Star in Nebraska; the communications director for the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska; the assistant director of the Peru State College Foundation in Peru, Nebraska; and the director of University Relations at Dickinson State University. Before becoming the communications director at Sanford Lab, Constance operated her own consulting firm that worked with individuals and businesses, representing a regional entertainer, and producing local concerts. At SURF, Constance will occasionally lead facility tours that include famous people. In 2015, for example, she met one of her childhood science heroes—Buzz Aldrin, who showed up unannounced for a tour of our underground facilities. “I like to say I have the best job in the world—and not only because of the Buzz Aldrin thing. It’s challenging, always exciting and I get to work with so many terrific people from all walks of life.” Connect with Constance on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/constance-walter-52730617/ About the CompanySanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) The Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, advances our understanding of the universe by providing laboratory space deep underground, where sensitive physics experiments can be shielded from cosmic radiation. Researchers at the Sanford Lab explore some of the most challenging questions facing 21st century physics, such as the origin of matter, the nature of dark matter and the properties of neutrinos. The facility also hosts experiments in other disciplines—including geology, biology and engineering. The Sanford Lab is located at the former Homestake gold mine, which was a physics landmark long before being converted into a dedicated science facility. Nuclear chemist Ray Davis earned a share of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2002 for a solar neutrino experiment he installed 4,850 feet underground in the mine.
