NEWTON, MA — A Newton police lieutenant has been awarded the The Irish American Police Officers Association (IAPOA) Medal of Valor for stopping an armed robbery in progress while off-duty and making an arrest. Lt. David Tempesta was presented the award on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at the Newton Police Department for his bravery on Dec. 3, 2019, when he observed an armed robbery in progress at a local convenience store he stopped into. In response to witnessing a suspect brandishing a knife while demanding money from a store employee, Tempesta drew his firearm and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. The suspect attempted to flee the store, but Tempesta was able to disarm him and place him into custody. "Lt. Tempesta's quick reaction, courage, and professionalism helped prevent a violent robbery and led to a quick resolution in a dangerous situation," said IAPOA Vice President David Collins in a statement. "We are pleased to present the lieutenant with the IAPOA's Medal of Valor." The IAPOA usually holds an annual awards dinner for all honorees, but has been unable to do so for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, the association is recognizing honorees by traveling to meet them and present the awards individually. The IAPOA is a designated 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
