Award-winning author Janisse Ray visits Apalachicola for one night only! Hear her speak 11/19, 5pm @ Apalachicola M.K. Public Library ! Writer Janisse Ray will speak at the Apalachicola Margaret Key Public Library at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 to celebrate the release of her new book, Wild Spectacle: Seeking Wonders in a World Beyond Humans. The book explores the wild earth and invites us to question its known and unknown beauties and curiosities. It includes a section on St. Vincent Island. Over 120 people attended a lecture by Ray in 2020, when she was in town for the Friends of St. Vincent speaker series. Now she’s coming back. The event is sponsored by the Patrons of the Apalachicola Library Society (PALS) and by Downtown Books and Purl. The library can accommodate about 30 people, and everyone is asked to wear a mask. “We are thrilled to have Janisse Ray visit our library, and so happy to offer this event to the public,” said Lucy Carter, library director. A number of Ray’s books are available at the library for checkout. If you would like to reserve a signed copy of the book but do not plan to attend the event, please contact Dale at the bookstore. Otherwise, books will be available at the talk/reading. Ray's first book, Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, rocketed her onto the American literary scene in 1999. It is a memoir about growing up on a junkyard among the longleaf pine ecosystem of the Southeast. It was a New York Times Notable Book and was chosen as the Book All Georgians Should Read. Janisse has been writer-in-residence at Hollins College, the University of Montana, the University of Mississippi, and others. She has taught and lectured widely. Ray has won an American Book Award, Pushcart Prize, Southern Bookseller Awards, Southern Environmental Law Center Writing Awards, Nautilus Award, and Eisenberg Award, among others. She has been inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame. She attended Florida State University and lived in Tallahassee for many years. She has often visited Apalachicola, although now she lives and works near Savannah, Georgia. For more information on Janisse Ray: www.janisseray.com
