NEW LONDON, CT — New London's recent coronavirus mask mandate, which was slated to expire this weekend, has been extended for an additional month to Nov. 22, Mayor Michael Passero announced Friday. The reason for the extension is that New London County continues to be "classified as in the high risk of transmission category," Passero said (read the mayor's declaration in the Facebook post below). Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends continued indoor COVID-19 mask usage in such situations. "I am deeply appreciative of the publics acceptance and cooperation with this mandate," Passero said in a statement. "Although a regional approach would likely have had a more significant impact in our communities, the common-sense approach by New London and Groton regarding COVID mitigation efforts have helped to keep our communities safe." The wearing of masks indoors in New London is required until Nov. 22, regardless of vaccination status, unless someone is eating or drinking. Passero is able to extend the mandate for another month, due to Gov. Ned Lamont granting municipalities such authority.
