PITTSBURGH, PA — They came without warning. Gusty winds were forecast Thursday in advance of a cold front that passed through the area, but no forecaster mentioned anything about tornado risks. But three twisters the National Weather Service were confirmed by radartouched down in southwestern Pennsylvania that night. Power was knocked out to more than 1,000 homes and there was considerable damage to homes and trees but no deaths or injuries were reported. Tornadoes in times of harvest moons are rare in southwestern Pennsylvania. Perhaps that's why the forecasters were caught off-guard. Now for the rest of the Weekly Wrap: A popular Pittsburgh Irish bar has reopened under new ownership. A day after veteran U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle announced he was retiring, state Rep. Summer Lee of Swissvale launched a bid for his seat. The Allegheny County Health Department shut down two catering services. The Allegheny Health Network provided details on its new $70 million outpatient facility project. Be the first to know what's happening in your community and region.
