FRANKFORT, IL — The Summit Hill Junior High girls cross country team took home a third-place finish at the 3A Sectional Oct. 9 at Martino Junior High School in New Lenox, according to a new release from Summit Hill Junior High. Eight members of the team secured a spot in the State Championship, according to the release.
Kate Roberts took third place at the sectional; Olivia Mancini finished fifth; Gracelyn Olson came in the 14th spot; Olivia Launius took 18th; Eliana Kaitei came in right behind at 19th; Vanessa Lee took 22nd; and Emily Flores rounded it out with a 27th-place finish, according to the release.
The girls were the first to qualify for the State Championship for the Spartans since 2013, according to the release. Luke Mueller, who finished seventh on the boys side, also qualified on his own.
The State Championship was held Oct. 16 at Parkside Junior High in Normal. Roberts, a seventh grader, finished highest for the Spartans, finishing the 2-mile course with a time of 12:42, good for 32nd place out of 232 runners, according to the release.
Summit Hill Junior High includes students from Frankfort, Mokena and Tinley Park.
