Happy Saturday, neighbors! Let's get you all caught up on what's happening locally to start today off on an informed note. First, today's weather: Plenty of sunshine. High: 75 Low: 52. Here are the top stories in Atlanta today: Authorities are searching for additional victims of a former Fulton County charter school teacher charged with sexually assaulting a minor. Robert Vandel, 63, of Canton, was arrested last month and charged with the 2020 rape of a student in his class at Roswell's Fulton Academy of Science and Technology (FAST) Charter School. The child was younger than 14 at the time of the assault, and state investigators believe Vandel may have sexually assaulted more young victims across Georgia and Alabama. Anyone with information is asked to contact Roswell Police Department Detective Cheryl Dickerson either by email at [email protected] or phone 770-640-4453. (Patch) Anthony Carter, a 9-year-old victim in the Atlanta child murders in 1980, will finally receive a headstone during a memorial service Sunday at Westview Cemetery, Hogansville. A headstone was never placed at Carter's grave, as was true for many of the 20-plus children and teenagers found dead in Atlanta between 1979 and 1981. In 2019, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms requested the city reopen the cases and use current technologies, such as analyzing new DNA evidence, to try to definitively solve the cases. Wayne Williams, long suspected by police of the Atlanta child murders, has maintained his innocence. Williams is currently serving two life sentences for the 1982 murders of two adults. (FOX 5 Atlanta) The Atlanta Braves will have another shot at heading to the World Series tonight. After losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-11 Thursday night in Southern California, the Braves will kick off Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at 5:08 p.m. tonight at Truist Park. Atlanta leads in the best-of-seven series three games to two. (Atlanta Patch) The family of a woman killed inside a Midtown Atlanta high-rise Wednesday said the 31-year-old was a beautiful soul who met a monster. According to her loved ones, Courtney Cox was in a relationship with her alleged killer, 32-year-old Jarvis Jarrette, of Milledgeville. Jarrette is believed to have prompted a massive police response when gunfire was reported at the Atlantic House Midtown apartments on West Peachtree Street about 3:25 a.m. Wednesday. Atlanta police Chief Rodney Bryant said officers responded within five minutes and "immediately engaged the individual that was shooting at them" from a balcony. Jarrette died during the shootout, which shut down several city blocks for hours. Cox had been an associate with the Paul Hastings Law Firm since 2016. (FOX 5 Atlanta) The city of Atlanta has been awarded $25,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies to improve pedestrian safety and quality of life in the Adams Park community. In discussing the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative grant, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said, "This project will focus on providing safe access to neighborhood schools, businesses and MARTA bus stops – all while improving the safety and quality of life of our communities." Atlanta is one of 26 U.S. cities to receive up to $25,000 in Asphalt Art Initiative grants from Bloomberg Philanthropies to install projects in 2022-23 using art and design to improve street safety, revitalize public spaces, and engage residents of their communities.
