Reading and conversation with poets Clemonce Heard and Tyehimba Jess. Free and open to the public in the OSU-Tulsa auditorium. Join us in celebrating five years of our annual Writers on Greenwood event! This reading and conversation, to take place at the OSU-Tulsa auditorium, is free and open to the public. Masks are expected and vaccination for all attendees is strongly advised. This year's guests are poets Clemonce Heard and Tyehimba Jess. CLEMONCE HEARD was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the winner of the 2020 Anhinga Robert Dana Prize, selected by Major Jackson. His poetry collection, TRAGIC CITY, which investigates the events of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, is forthcoming from Anhinga Press in October 2021. Heard’s work has appeared or is forthcoming from Obsidian, The Missouri Review, Cimarron Review, Iron Horse, World Literature Today, Poetry, Rattle, Ruminate, and elsewhere. He earned an MFA in creative writing from Oklahoma State University. Heard was a recipient of a 2018-2019 Tulsa Artist Fellowship and was the 2019-2020 Ronald Wallace Poetry Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently lives in San Antonio, Texas, and serves as the Sala Diaz artist-in-residence. TYEHIMBA JESS is the author of two books of poetry, LEADBELLY and OLIO. OLIO won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize. It was also nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the PEN Jean Stein Book Award, and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Jess, a Cave Canem and NYU Alumni, is a veteran of the 2000 and 2001 Green Mill Poetry Slam Team, and won a 2000–2001 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship in Poetry, the 2001 Chicago Sun-Times Poetry Award, and a 2006 Whiting Fellowship.
