American Red Cross: Responding to Crises Across the Country, be the next step to recovery and hope. The American Red Cross is no stranger to unprecedented times. When help can’t wait, its dedicated workers, 90% of them volunteers, spring into action wherever and whenever people need us most. From East to West, under storm clouds or smoky skies, the work of the Red Cross to alleviate human suffering never stops — even during a pandemic. Since early June, states across the West have been on fire. Sparked by prolonged droughts and weeks of unprecedented heatwaves, over 80 large wildfires have raged across 10 states. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to flee the flames, some with only a moment’s notice. Hundreds have been in shelters for weeks not knowing what awaits them when — or even if — they can return home[GK1] . More than 1,200 Red Cross disaster workers have supported relief efforts, either virtually or in person. The shelters supported with partners have been a haven during these traumatic times, offering wildfire survivors a safe spot to rest and take their first steps toward recovery. Meanwhile, states throughout the South and Northeast have felt the impact of multiple hurricanes, torrential rainfalls, relentless winds and massive storm surges. The impact on communities has been devastating with downed trees and powerlines causing wide-scale electrical outages, neighborhoods submerged, and homes pushed off their foundations. Residents will struggle in the aftermath for days to come. In response, hundreds of trained disaster workers have deployed to impacted communities, serving hot meals and snacks with our partners and providing socially-distanced emotional support as residents process their traumatic experiences. The success of the Red Cross depends on compassionate, resourceful volunteers, people just like you, who give their time and talent to bring hope to others. You can help communities get back on their feet after disaster strikes. Volunteer today as a Disaster Recovery Volunteer and work directly with individuals and families as they navigate the journey to recovery. Apply or learn more here. [GK1]
