First, today's weather: Morning rain, heavy at times. High: 68 Low: 54. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: Police are investigating a despicable hate crime at a synagogue in Carmichael. Fliers were left plastered to the large white menorah in front of the synagogue with images of Hitler on them. Sheriff's investigators are taking the incident very seriously. "This is being investigated as a hate crime," said Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Rod Grassmann. "This is a place where people should feel safe. When they go in their place of worship, everyone should feel safe." (FOX40)California may be facing a labor shortage, but these dogs are ready for duty! The California Highway Patrol announced graduation and deployment of 10 new canine teams. The graduation ceremony was held in West Sacramento. The teams completed between 440 and 600 hours of training prior to graduation. They join 38 other canine teams as part of the CHP force. The CHP uses its canines to perform a variety of functions, including detecting human scent, contraband and explosives. A canine team can improve the safety and effectiveness of officers as well as save time and money. (Gold Country Media)Former Sacramento Kings broadcaster and popular radio talk show host Grant Napear has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the company that let him go following a controversial tweet. In May 2020, former Kings player DeMarcus Cousins tweeted at Napear, asking him, "what's your take on BLM?" In response, Napear tweeted in part, "ALL LIVES MATTER…EVERY SINGLE ONE!!!" "And I said 'all lives matter, every single one', because I meant it. Do the lives of Black people matter? Hell yeah, the lives of Black people matter," Napear said at the time. "I'm for equality for all; that's how I was raised. That's how my dad brought up my brother and I." (FOX40)Caltrans is now offering people money to remove litter and trash from local highways. The incentive pays people up to $250 a day per cleanup activity. It's part of Governor Newsom's $1.1 billion plan to clean up California, including providing funding for highways and roads. Volunteers can also get cash for clearing graffiti, thinning vegetation, and planting trees along other areas like bike paths. Sacramento is one of 13 counties participating in the program. (CBS Sacramento) Bus driver shortages at Sacramento area schools don't seem to be getting any better. As a result some students are not getting home until 2 or 3 hours after school has ended. Working parents say they can't pick their kids up after school and for some students walking or riding a bike is also not a possibility. Elk Grove has lost more drivers than it has hired during the school year. Elk Grove Unified is one of many school districts dealing with the issue, along with Roseville, Rocklin Unified, Folsom Cordova Unified, San Juan Unified, and Sacramento City Unified. With so few applicants in the pipeline, districts say this driver crisis could continue for the rest of the school year.
