PASADENA, CA — A Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education member has filed a lawsuit against the district, alleging that certain board protocols violate her First Amendment rights, according to Pasadena Now. In her suit, Board Member Tina Fredericks claim the protocols violate her rights because it requires board members to submit opinion pieces they write to the district's superintendent and board president for review before it can be published. The protocols also place restrictions on what a board member can say in opinion pieces about other board members, the magazine reported. Fredericks said the lawsuit is a result of her being criticized for writing an opinion piece expressing her support of a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for the district without receiving prior approval, according to Pasadena Now. Fredericks wrote the piece before Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order requiring teachers in California to be vaccinated.
