CONCORD, NH — A language arts teacher from South Hampton is New Hampshire's 2022 Teacher of the Year. Sara Casassa, who teaches at the Barnard School on the Seacoast, was named teacher of the year on Tuesday, in a surprise visit by members of the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee. Christine Brennan, the deputy commissioner of education, called her "an ultimate professional in her field" who knew "how to create a highly engaging learning environment for students through literacy and technology." Casassa has been teaching for about 30 years. She has been at the Barnard School since 2009. "There is no teacher who is more deserving than you," Assistant Superintendent David Hobbs of SAU 21 said. Casassa was selected from more than 70 applicants, 28 nominees and three finalists. She will spend the next year being the ambassador for all teachers in the state. "Most importantly, Sara loves her students," Michelle Witt, principal at Barnard School, said in Casassa's application letter. "This is evident in the relationships that she builds with all students and their families. Her sense of humor and easy-going personality make her a beloved teacher at Barnard School. Poetry Out Loud 2022 Registration is now underway by the N.H. State Council on the Arts for 2022's New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud competition. The council, which facilitates the competition, expects thousands of high school students from 40 schools to participate. Local winners will compete nationally in Washington, D.C., in April. While the 2021 competition was virtual, officials expect next year's events to be in person. Death In Sanbornton New Hampshire State Police as well as local police are investigating an untimely death in Sanbornton. The body of Megan Robinson, 33, of Tuftonboro was found in town on Wednesday. An autopsy was performed Thursday but the cause and manner of death were not determined, pending toxicology and investigatory reports to be completed.
