MONROVIA, CA — Substitute teachers for the Monrovia Unified School District will get a pay bump for the rest of the school year. The district's Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution on Oct. 13 to raise the daily rate of substitute teachers to $190 — marking a $50 increase. Officials said the pay increase was so that the district could "maintain a pool of highly qualified substitutes to keep MUSD competitive with surrounding districts." The district said it had issues finding highly qualified substitutes teachers during the pandemic as the previous rate of $140 per day was lower than the pay offered by neighbor districts. The previous rate had remained the same for four years. In addition to raising the day rate, the district also approved raising the day rate for subs who have taught a cumulative of at least 60 days to $205 and the long-term daily rate to $220. The new rates are effective Thursday. "It is projected to impact COVID-19 one-time funding by $325,000," the district said. "However, by lowering the use of agency substitutes for $255 and period coverage provided by teachers, the full amount of the budget impact may not be realized."
