PPP Loan Fraud Probe: 2 Cars, $24,814 May Face Forfeiture

JOLIET, IL — A man and a woman arrested two weeks ago by Joliet police in connection with allegations they orchestrated state benefits fraud with COVID-19 Pandemic and Paycheck Protection loans have been released from jail without any charges from the Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow. "No further information will be released as this investigation is ongoing," Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English announced on Oct. 11. This week, an assistant Will County state's attorney filed documents at the courthouse indicating that two automobiles and $24,814 in cash belonging to Jelili Olaniyan, 34, and Asia Olaniyan, 41, may become forfeited assets for the police. The Olaniyans were released from the Will County Jail on Oct. 8 when prosecutors decided not to file charges at that time. According to this week's civil proceeding opened against the Olaniyans, the Oct. 7 Joliet police raid at their house in the 1000 block of Edgerton Drive seized the following items: 1 white 2015 Mercedes GL4501 black 2020 Lexus RX 350$268 in cash$18,846 in cash$5,700 in cash1 men's silver and gold Rolex watch1 women's wedding ring1 men's Gucci sweatsuit1 red Gucci bag with red Gucci backpack1 black Gucci bag with 2 Gucci bags inside1 black Gucci belt2 pairs of Louis Vuitton sunglasses1 Gucci Mickey Mouse tote bag1 pair of Louis Vuitton black and gold shoes1 pair of Louis Vuitton blue loafers1 pair of Christian Louboutin black and green loafers1 pair of Gucci green and brown hikers1 pair of Gucci Mickey Mouse loafers1 pair of Gucci black and white sandals1 pair of Gucci baby shoes1 pair of Gucci blue loafers4 Samsung and 2 Apple cell phones1 MacBook Air A hearing involving the cash, vehicles and possessions seized from the Joliet house on Edgerton Drive is set for Oct. 27 in Courtroom 403. The hearing will determine if probable cause exists to make the couple's property subject to a civil forfeiture. "This hearing is not a trial on the merits of the forfeiture case," the document signed by Joliet Police Sgt. Tim Powers indicated.
