Description

In this is pay-what-you-can meetup, bring your current project to work on to pair with anti-racist, feminist discussion with Logan(she/they) Looking to expand your feminist circle? Looking for like-minded people who are also creative types? Maybe you want to make your own feminist street art but you need inspiration and/or accountability? In this is pay-what-you-can meetup, come bring your current sewing/embroidery/fiber art project to work on while we all have an open discussion about the world around us from an anti-racist, feminist perspective. (the art you make does not necessarily have to have a feminist message! All art is protest :)) This meetup is a safe space for anyone on their feminist journey; even if you have only recently adopted the label “feminist!” We just ask that all participants be willing to grow as much as they would like to discuss. Intersectionality is very important to us! We at RETHINK believe that if your feminism isn’t intersectional, it isn’t feminism. What does that mean? Intersectionality means that the society we live in is systemically built to not include lots of different types of people, and that your feminism can and should reflect that. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) deal with racism, LGBTQ+ individuals deal with homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, etc. Disabled people deal with ableism. These identities, and more, can and do constantly intersect. (examples: misogynoir is the intersection of racism and sexism, lesbophobia is the intersection of sexism and homophobia.) Intersectionality means that you approach feminism with all of these people in mind and more. Without intersectionality we leave lots of people out of our activism! If you are looking for a safe place to gab and/or vent about the patriarchal, hetero and cis-normative, racist, fatphobic, and ableist (etc) society we happen to have found ourselves in, while also having a space to meet and bond with other creative types, and channel that energy into art--you may have found the right spot! As well as venting about the shortcomings of our society we’ll also be discussing our favorite Feminist activists, authors, books, artists, and our favorite inclusive representations we may have seen on screen. *warning* discussion might get deep! RETHINK is a safe space! We pride ourselves on being inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals, disabled people, and people of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Absolutely no hate will be tolerated. This is a meetup for open-minded individuals who are willing to confront their own shortcomings as well as the shortcomings of our society. Resident non-binary lesbian embroidery artist and mender Logan (she/they, @astitchintimesaves09) will be there to help moderate discussion. They will be working on some of their street art that they staple on utility poles around the Twin Cities. We will have the respect-bell just in case discussion might get heated or we might need to remind anyone to be respectful. **COVID-19 Class Policy/Expectations** -Masks required for all (no gators and mask must easily fit over participants nose) -For larger group classes student must show proof of vaccination (picture of card via email prior to class is okay) -Private class after hours--no walk-ins can enter the class zone. -If you’ve had symptoms, feel unwell, have a temperature of 100 degrees F or higher, or been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 please reschedule.
