SOMERVILLE, MA — A Tufts University student died in an accident Saturday afternoon, school officials said.
Madie Nicpon, a member of the Class of 2023, was a biopsychology major and women's lacrosse player. Officials did not elaborate on the nature of the accident, but a university spokesperson confirmed to the Boston Herald the accident happened at a charity fundraiser at an off-campus residence in Somerville.
"In the face of this painful loss, our hearts go out to Madie's family and friends," Tufts President Anthony Monaco, Arts and Sciences Dean James Glaser and Dean of Student Affairs Camille Lizarríbar said in a joint statement.
About 3,000 students, faculty and staff gathered Sunday at the Gantcher Center in Nicpon's memory, and then held a candlelight vigil on Bello Field, university officials said. A GoFundMe campaign to assist her family with funeral and medical expenses had raised close to $140,000 of its $150,000 goal as of 9 a.m. Tuesday.
"Her generosity and kindness has left a lasting impact on those around her," Theresa Osborne, who organized the fundraiser, wrote.
Nicpon, a native of Suffern, New York, was a three-sport athlete at Suffern High School and president of her senior class.
