BRADENTON, FL — Vote for Bradenton Police Department and help the agency win a grant for its K-9 unit. The agency is asking its followers on social media to vote for its K-9 unit in the Aftermath K-9 grant competition for the Florida region. If BPD wins, funding will be used for training and to purchase equipment, police said. The department's K-9 unit is staff by four officers and four K-9s, according to the agency's website. The canine handler and service dog must successfully complete more than 600 hours of specialized training prior to being placed on patrol duty. The K-9 teams maintain their certification through bi-weekly training in the areas of drug detection, building and area searches, tracking, and apprehension of subjects. Those supporting BPD can vote for the agency's K-9 unit online here by Tuesday. People can vote once every 24 hours.
