COPIAGUE, NY — A Long Island resident will no longer continue as a contestant in NBC's 'The Voice'. Kaitlyn Velez, 21, of Copiague, was eliminated in Tuesday night's episode of Battles Rounds, after performing Coldplay's "Yellow" with co-contestant Berritt Haynes, 19, of Alabama. Ultimately, Blake Shelton chose Haynes as the winner of the battle. "Berritt had such an incredible performance," said Shelton. "There was just no way to not recognize that and hand him the victory." Velez, who auditioned with a ukulele cover of Mike Posner's "Please Don't Go", recently spoke with Patch about her journey to 'The Voice'. An alumni of Connetquot High School, Velez began writing music at the age of 14. As a Latina growing up in a predominantly white area, she'd feel isolated and turn to music for comfort. "It's a very hard thing," Velez told Patch. "There were definitely things I had to navigate that obviously, my peers didn't have to." After her final episode, Velez wrote on social media that she was thankful for the opportunity to compete on the show. "Short but sooo sweet" wrote Velez in an Instagram post. "I'm so incredibly grateful for this experience. "Top 48 are some of the most special people I've ever met and I couldn't have picked better people to go through this life changing experience with."
