HAYMARKET, VA — A 13-year-old boy died on Tuesday after he was struck by a minivan in Haymarket, according to the Prince William County Police Department. The boy was in the roadway when he was struck, authorities said.
The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, near the intersection of James Madison Highway and Graduation Drive. The roadway was shut down for several hours as authorities investigated the crash.
In a news release, police said that a 2019 Honda Odyssey traveling north struck the 13-year-old pedestrian who was in the roadway on James Madison Highway, just before Graduation Drive. Investigators determined the driver of the Honda Odyssey had a green light to proceed through the intersection as the pedestrian was attempting to cross James Madison Highway from Dominion Valley Drive to Graduation Drive, the police department said.
The driver of the Odyssey remained on the scene after the crash, and was not injured. The pedestrian, who has not been publicly identified due to a Virginia law protecting the identities of children, was taken to a nearby hospital. At the hospital, the boy died as a result of his injuries.
After the crash, residents started a petition urging local officials to find ways to increase pedestrian safety along Route 15/James Madison Highway, particularly near Battlefield High School. One petition, which is requesting a pedestrian overpass, accumulated more than 1,900 signatures as of Wednesday morning.
