SUNNYVALE, CA — Outdoor enthusiasts in Mountain View who are missing their neighborhood REI Co-Op won't have to wait long until the store relocates to Sunnyvale.
The store in Mountain View closed permanently on Oct. 17. REI Sunnyvale opens Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. A grand opening is scheduled for the following weekend.
The Sunnyvale store will be almost 7,000 square feet larger than the Mountain View location, according to a news release. It is located at 130 East El Camino Real, on the southeast corner of the intersection with Sunnyvale Saratoga Road.
Locals might remember that address as the former site of a Toys "R" Us store that was rumored to be haunted for a long time. REI's Camp Monsters podcast team will be at the grand opening to share the story and giving out branded YETI products while supplies last, the company said.
REI will also be giving away items in the morning during the grand opening weekend Oct. 29-31. The store opens at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and at 10 a.m. Sunday. There is also an outdoor social from 2-6 p.m. that weekend with live music, outdoor gear vendors, and local nonprofits, the news release said. Nonprofits including Latino Outdoors, Santa Clara County Parks, Saved By Nature, and Silicon Valley Bicycle will be there.
The new store will have a community room that will host classes and presentations in 2022, according to REI. The room will be available as a meeting space for nonprofits and community organizations. The Sunnyvale store will also have "an expanded bike, ski and snowboard shop staffed with certified mechanics to tune or repair equipment."
