Mountain Brook Police Officers Honor The Fallen In Washington

MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL – The entire Mountain Brook Police Department Scout Unit traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to attend the 40th Annual Peace Officers Memorial Service, which honors officers killed in the line of duty. Each year, families of fallen officers are invited to attend the memorial. The three Mountain Brook officers traveled to D.C. from Oct. 11-17 to help escort ceremonial units from event to event, and make sure that everything ran smoothly, according to a report from CBS 42 News. The officers also paid respects to three Mountain Brook officers killed protecting their community by getting pencil etchings of their names at the memorial. Sgt. Freddie Harp died in 1973, Officer George Todd Herring died in 1987, and Officer Theron Houlditch died in 1990, according to CBS. Each year on the anniversary of their deaths, the department flies its flag at half mast and places a wreath on its Fallen Police Memorial Statue. In 2021, 356 police officers died in the line of duty, including nine from Alabama, according to CBS. See here for the full CBS News report.
