Performing classical compositions, Uri Caine will be making a rare NY area solo appearance at KinoSaito.
One of the world’s premier pianists and composers, Uri began his career in his native Philadelphia playing jazz with bands led by Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Johnny Coles, Mickey Roker, Odean Pope, Bootsie Barnes, Bobby Durham and Grover Washington, and studying classical composition with George Rochberg and George Crumb. To date, he has recorded 33 albums as a leader, a vast and diverse discography that includes solo piano records, acoustic trio and electric trio records, and albums of his acclaimed ensemble arrangements of Mahler, Wagner, Mozart, Verdi, Schumann, Beethoven, and Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
KinoSaito is a nonprofit interdisciplinary art center established to extend the collaborative and experimental practices of the Japanese American abstract painter and avant-garde theater designer, Kikuo Saito (1939–2016). Located in the newly renovated former St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Verplanck, NY, the art center, which had been Saito’s studio, houses two large art galleries, a multipurpose theater/dance/performance space, two studios for a rotating roster of resident artists, a classroom for arts education and public programs, a café, and a bountiful garden.MissionKinoSaito is an art center rooted in the creation and practice of abstract art and committed to nurturing experimentation in every form and medium.
