In-person film screening of Summer of Soul with a talk back featuring Questlove. IN-PERSONJoin us at the Schomburg Center for an in-person screening of Summer Of Soul (...Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), a feature documentary about the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival which celebrated African American music and culture, and promoted Black pride and unity. Following the screening we will have a conversation with the film's director Amir "Questlove" Thompson moderated by award-winning filmmaker Shola Lynch, Curator of the Moving Image & Recorded Sound division at the Schomburg Center. Run Time: 1h 58min | PG-13 FIRST COME, FIRST SEATED Events are free and open to all, but due to space constraints registration is requested. Doors open 15 to 30 minutes before start time. We will operate at a very limited capacity of 80-100 people. PARTICIPANTSAmir "Questlove" Thompson is a drummer, DJ, producer, culinary entrepreneur, designer, New York Times bestselling and James Beard Award–nominated author, and cofounder of Philadelphia’s most influential hip-hop group, the Roots. He is the musical director for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where the Roots serve as the house band, and a four-time Grammy Award–winning musician. He is also an adjunct professor at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Shola Lynch is an award-winning American Filmmaker best known for the feature documentary FREE ANGELA & All Political Prisoners and the Peabody Award winning documentary CHISHOLM ’72: Unbought & Unbossed. Her independent film body of work and her other collaborative projects feed her passion to bring history alive with captivating stories of people, places and events. Since 2013 she has also served as the Curator of the Moving Image & Recorded Sound division of the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. In 2016, Shola became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Schomburg Center's Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division (MIRS, pronounced “meers”) collects and preserves audio and moving image (AMI) materials related to the experiences of people of African descent. The division has amassed nearly 400 collections, approximately 5,000 square feet, in a variety of formats, which captures the gestures and sounds of major historical, artistic and cultural moments and influencers.
