Police Warn Of Phone Scam Targeting Sarasota Residents

SARASOTA, FL — The Sarasota Police Department has received several complaints about a man pretending to be with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office calling them and trying to scam them. The man, cloning the sheriff's office phone number, claims to be a sergeant with SCSO and tells the person he's calling that there is a warrant for their arrest, Sarasota police shared on their Facebook page. He tells the victim to get a MoneyPak pre-paid debit card and call him back at a second number to give him the card's information, police said. He also tells victims to turn themselves in to the front desk of the police department of the sheriff's office. "As a reminder, we would never contact you and ask you for a money order or any other type of cash transaction over the telephone," Sarasota police said. "If you feel that you have been a victim of this, contact the front desk of your local agency that you reside in. Be sure you know what agency has your jurisdiction."
