Description
Two Separate and Important Votes for Voting on the New Elementary School This Fall, Medfield residents will be asked to vote on building a new elementary school, for grades 4 and 5 at 17 Elm Street. This school will replace the existing Dale Street School with a new school adjacent to the Wheelock School. The Town of Medfield requires a two-step process, where residents cast two separate votes on two separate days, in order to approve the building of the new school. The Medfield Board of Selectmen have set dates and times for both actions. A Special Town Meeting is the first vote by Town residents to authorize appropriating funds for the new school. A two-thirds majority of those present is required for the vote to pass. The Special Town Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, November 7, at 12 Noon at Medfield High School. Residents must be in person to cast a vote. The Special Town Election is the second required vote of the Town residents. This is a ballot vote and a simple majority (50%-plus-one) is needed in order to approve the borrowing of funds for the new school. The ballot question asks voters to approve a Proposition 2 ½ debt exclusion to fund the annual debt payments for the new school. This vote will be held following the usual Town Election procedures which includes in-person voting and absentee voting. The Special Town Election (a ballot vote) is scheduled for Monday, November 15, at the Council on Aging Center on Icehouse Road. The polls will be open from 6 AM to 8 PM. In order to participate in both of the votes residents need to be registered to vote in the Town of Medfield. Residents new to Medfield need to register if they'd like to participate in the vote. Those interested in registering may register online at sec.state.ma.us/OVR, or they may email, call or visit the Medfield Town Clerk at Town Hall. The last day to register to vote in the Special Town Meeting is Thursday, October 28th (10 days prior to the meeting).
