Welcome back, Spokane! Let's get this Wednesday started off right. Here are the most important things happening today in town. First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy, a few showers. High: 58 Low: 41. Here are the top stories in Spokane today: Spokane City Council unanimously decided to delay an increase in business registration fees and agreed to reduce the fee amount for startup businesses. In explaining its decision, the council said it is hoping to "accommodate small business owners rather than raise costs as well as give a head start to new businesses to emerge." New businesses will now pay $60 for the registration fee from February 1, 2022, until the end of 2022. (KXLY Spokane) Landlords who accept rental assistance payments would be prohibited from jacking up the rent under a proposal introduced by Spokane City Council President Breean Beggs on Monday. For a year after receiving the rental assistance payment, a landlord could not increase the rent by more than the rate of inflation and would need to provide at least 90 days of written notice before doing so. The proposal would also protect tenants from eviction if a portion of unpaid rent is from March 2020 through July 2021 and they have applied for rental assistance. (The Spokesman Review)Three Spokane municipal court judges are up for re-election this year. There's one contested race for the seat now held by Matthew Antush, but the other two judges, Mary Logan and Kristin O'Sullivan, are unopposed. (Spokane Public Radio) Providence Health Care reported 97 percent of its staff at hospitals and clinics in Spokane and Stevens Counties have complied with Governor Jay Inslee's vaccine mandate.
