Here are the top stories today in Salt Lake City: The COVID-19 pandemic not only disrupted education, it also made it difficult for low-income families to balance work and child care. So when Salt Lake City was awarded close to $85 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan earlier this year, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said finding ways to help students and families rose to the top of the ways to spend the money. While most of the money would go toward keeping the city fully staffed and its workers compensated, the mayor said Salt Lake City has a "once in a generation opportunity" for major changes — like helping students and families. (KSL.com) Calling the spraying of mosquito pesticides "a profound failure of public policy," Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment (UPHE) and national experts are calling on the Salt Lake City Council to adopt a moratorium the practice. UPHE claims that pesticide spraying is a relic of the 1950s and a public health hazard, causing damage to the brain development of infants and the unborn, even in small amounts, as well as a link to the high rates of autism in Utah. UPHE also states that mosquitoes are becoming resistant to pesticides and do nothing to reduce the incidence of West Nile Virus, which is no longer considered a public health hazard regardless.(fox13now.com) Following a deadly crash during a police chase in Salt Lake City, Chris Bertram, a retired deputy chief of police and current professor of criminal justice, is weighing in on police pursuits relating to this case.
