Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Wednesday October 20th, 2021! First, today's weather: Mostly cloudy, showers around. High: 61 Low: 55. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: An alarm that was blaring in East Sacramento for over half an hour late Monday night was not from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, the company said. A spokesperson with SMUD told KCRA 3 the alarm appeared to have sounded off from its 59th Street location along Folsom Boulevard in East Sacramento, but she clarified that the alarm is not a SMUD alarm, but instead a county air raid system. With no air raids in site, the alarm had been turned off by 11:10 p.m. (KCRA3) Violent crime is continuing to increase in Sacramento, outgoing Police Chief Daniel Hahn said on Monday. The chief tweeted out some sobering statistics including 48 murders so far this year compared to 35 this time last year. "Thru September, violence continues to rise," Hahn said in the tweet. (KCRA3) The Sacramento City Council is funding $5M for improvements in Old Sacramento to help with public safety after 3 shootings this summer, 2 of which turned deadly. $60K will go toward street closures, $300K for security cameras, $300K for security personnel and $4.5M for lighting. That's some pretty expensive lighting, but if it helps with keeping Old Sac safe for those of us who enjoy it's unique experiences, let's do it. (ABC10) Thousands of parents, students and teachers walked out of school and onto the California State Capitol lawn in Sacramento on Monday. About two thousand protesters from all across the state converged on the lawn in protest of the state vaccine mandate. Some parents pulled their kids out of school to make it clear how attendance would be impacted with the mandate. Districts saw a strong walkout, but overall, the majority of kids showed up. There were a few parents there who were advocating for the mandate, as well. One parent summed it up this way: "As a parent, you always want to do what's best for your child. The vaccine isn't political. We've had all of these vaccinations that are mandatory and COVID just needs to be another one added to the list." (CBS Sacramento) A state-run pest prevention program partly violates California's landmark environmental protection law with its approach to spraying pesticides, a state appeals court has ruled. The court found that a pest prevention and management program run by the California Department of Food and Agriculture violated the California Environmental Quality Act by failing to conduct site-specific environmental reviews and notify the public before sprays. The ruling also found the program doesn't appropriately consider contamination to water bodies or mitigate harm on bees and that the department understated existing pesticide use.
