PALM DESERT, CA — The Palm Desert City Council and the Palm Desert Cultural Arts Committee is asking residents to vote on the city's next piece of public art, which will be installed atop the highly visible roundabout at San Pablo Avenue and San Gorgonio Way. The Cultural Arts Committee has narrowed it down to two sculptures — "Sunburst" by Donald Gialanella and "Dueling Palms" by Kyle Absolom. Residents can click here to see photos of the sculptures, learn about the works from the artists, and vote on their favorite. The sculpture with the most votes will be installed at the roundabout. Voting will be open until October 31. Located just to the north of Highway 111 and El Paseo, the roundabout along San Pablo Avenue's mile-long corridor connects a commercial area with residential neighborhoods as well as College of the Desert, Palm Desert City Hall, and the Civic Center Park. Recent improvements to the area included landscaping, bicycle lanes, options for outdoor dining, pocket parks with interactive amenities, community gardens, and a space for a farmer's market and other special events. "Designed along a more intimate scale than El Paseo and with more opportunities for mixed-use development, this family-friendly area is intended to become Palm Desert's city center," the city said on its website.
