PITTSBURGH, PA — All of the on-ice stunts Iceburgh has performed over the years apparently have paid off. The Pittsburgh Penguins mascot had advanced to the final round of voting for induction into The Mascot Hall of Fame. The hall's executive committee initially selected 24 candidates for possible induction based on more than 71,000 ballots cast by the public, annual members of the hall and its executive committee. The list has been whittled down to 10 and online voting through Oct. 23 will determine if any of them make the 2022 induction class. The hall will announce on Nov. 5 if any of the mascots made it in. The induction ceremony will be held in July at the hall in Whitting, Indiana. Iceburgh's unique resume is a plus. He is the only sports mascot to ever get into a fight with Jean-Claude Van Damme in a movie - 1995's "Sudden Death." According to his profile on the hall website, Iceburgh's other accomplishments include: Thirty years as the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins mascot.Being the mascot for the 2009, 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup champion Penguins.Featured in the 1995 Hollywood Movie "Sudden Death" starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.Performing in Russia and Japan.Being featured in several ESPN commercials.Making countless community and philanthropic appearances throughout western Pennsylvania.
