CHICAGO — Fans played hooky Tuesday, waving signs and cheering as double-decker buses paraded down Michigan Avenue to a Millennium Park rally to celebrate the Chicago Sky's WNBA title.
"We need this in Chicago," Vickie Williams, a Chicago police officer, told the Sun-Times. "Crime is a little high, the COVID thing and everything, we need some positivity."
Sky superfan Chance the Rapper played a starring role in the celebration. After having "champagne for breakfast," the Chatham-neighborhood native dropped the F-bomb on stage twice while thanking the champs for making Chicago "winners again."
Chance also told NBC5 that he plans to get a tattoo of the team's choosing on his forearm Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Sky season ticket holder, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker each used their executive powers to rename Chicago "Sky Town" in honor of the team's first-ever WNBA title.
Sky star Candace Parker, a Naperville native, and WNBA Finals MVP Kahleah Copper each thanked fans for selling out Wintrust Arena and energizing the team during the come-from-behind win to clinch the championship series.
